For a vintage guitar too maintain top value, you will want to make sure it is in its original condition. If the guitar has been refinished or refurbished it will be less valuable than a guitar in its original condition.

Finding an auction with plenty of photos, so you can get the full scope of the guitar really helps. You will want a clear photo of the neck since this is the most prone area for damage. Look for any type of warping or bowing.

Most vintage guitars will have natural wear on them. Unless you have extreme wear, the value of the vintage guitar will not be hurt. you will also want to check the sellers feedback ratings. Make sure he doesn’t have too many negative comments. almost all sellers will have some negative comments since you can’t make everyone happy all the time.

The Basics of Reading Guitar Tab

To start out, tabs are written in lines, each line representing a string on the guitar. The thickest string being the bottom most line and the thinnest string being the topmost.

Numbers are then placed on these lines to represent finger positions on the guitar fret board. If you read the diagram below you would play this on a guitar by putting your finger just behind the 2nd fret on the 5th string (or the second thickest string). As musical notes this would read as follows B B B C# B A. The ‘zero’ represents playing an open string. So in this case you would play the A open with no finger position on the fretboard.

How to Read Guitar Tab Chords

To tab a chord the notes would be placed in a vertical line upon the horizontal ones. This diagram represents a C Chord. You would strum the bottom 5 strings of the guitar in one motion if you were to read this tab properly.

The one shortcoming of guitar tab is it doesn’t usually represent how long to hold a note for, or rhythm very well. Although some good tab writers will represent it by how much space is between each note. Tab works best if you listen to the song for guidance on timing then read the notes and practice it. Here for example is the timing of ‘Day Tripper’ by the Beatles, note the distances between the numbers, the first ‘0′ would ring slightly longer then the next 4 notes and the distance between D2 and D0 would also indicate a break in timing:

Tablature Symbols

The numbers don’t really describe the subtle techniques that a guitarist can execute, these are the tablature symbols that represent various techniques.

Kay had got Barney Kessel, the top guitarist in the late 50’s, to endorse three models (Jazz Special, Artist, and Pro) of the series. This only lasted for three years then Kessel left to join Gibson. All of the Gold line are quality instruments using the same hardware found on the top guitars of that era. The main problem commonly found with Kays are neck joints needing reset. All the Gold models besides the bass had single coil pick-ups with a clear-silver plastic cover and adjustable pole pieces via a philips-head bolt. The Upbeat also came with an optional transparent-black plastic cover. These pick-ups appeared on many other Kay made instruments through to the late 60’s and are sometimes referred to as Kessel or Kleenex Box. The Jazz Special Bass has one single coil chrome pick-up. The 1950’s models generally had thick necks, but the Jazz II had a much slimmer neck.

The early Silvertone electric guitars were made by Harmony and Danelectro, with a few exceptions. Danelectro had been making amplifiers since the 1940’s for Sears, Epiphone and it’s own brand. Their manufacturing facility was in Neptune New Jersey. The Dano’s started mainly with the infamous “U” series which had the Lipstick pickups and “Coke-bottle” headstocks. Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix and many other rock stars got started and continue to play the Dano’s. Aside from the very first Danelectros for Sears they all had the Lipstick pickups. That’s how you can tell a Dano from the other manufacturers. Danelectro also manufactured the infamous “amp-in-case” models
